Abstract

Objective: The Digital Pen with Tablet (DPT) outperforms the Standard Mouse (SM) and other alternative mice in reducing both duration and intensity of muscle contractions in the neck, shoulders, and upper extremity. These reductions are crucial for lowering the risk of Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs) caused by fatigue and overexertion mechanisms. Although evidence supporting the DPT’s effectiveness in preventing WMSDs is limited, this study aims to evaluate its role as a primary preventive strategy for WMSDs.

Materials and Methods: A crossover experimental design with repeated measures was employed, involving 35 healthy female computer users. Participants completed two 2-hour rounds of computer-based tasks, alternating between the SM and the DPT. The Muscle Fatigue Rates (MFRs) of Upper Trapezius (UT), Pronator Teres (PT), Extensor Digitorum (ED), and Flexor Digitorum Superficialis (FDS) were assessed using electromyography. Statistical analyses were conducted to examine the effects of different devices and timepoints using unpaired and paired t-tests for normally distributed data.

Results: The DPT significantly reduced the MFR of FDS compared with the SM, particularly during the second hour (p < 0.05), and maintained a stable MFR of FDS over the two hours. These findings demonstrate that the DPT effectively delayed the progression of fatigue in the FDS. However, no significant differences were observed in the MFR of UT, PT, and ED (p > 0.05).

Conclusion: The DPT demonstrates superior effectiveness than the SM in delaying fatigue progression in the FDS, suggesting its role as the primary preventive strategy for WMSDs in the distal upper extremity.
